Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi (1181/1182 – October 3, 1226) was a Roman Catholic friar and mystic, preacher, and the founder of the Franciscan Order. Born into a wealthy family, Francis renounced his wealth and embraced a life of poverty and service. Life

Francis was born to a wealthy family in Assisi, Italy. His father, Pietro di Bernardone, was a cloth merchant, and his mother, Pica, was of French origin. Francis was baptized Giovanni, but his father renamed him Francesco (Francis) due to his love of France.

At the age of 20, Francis joined a military excursion against Perugia and was taken prisoner. Upon his release, he returned to Assisi and had a spiritual awakening. He began to live a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and dedicated himself to God.

Francis founded the Franciscan Order in 1209. The order was committed to a life of poverty and service to the poor. Francis preached the gospel throughout Italy and France, and even ventured to Egypt in an attempt to convert the Sultan.

In 1219, Francis received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ. He died on October 3, 1226, and was canonized as a saint in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX.
