Demeter (in der römischen Mythologie auch als Ceres bekannt) ist die griechische Göttin der Landwirtschaft, des Getreides und der Fruchtbarkeit. Sie ist die Tochter von Cronus und Rhea, zwei der ursprünglichen Titanen. Ihre Geschwister sind Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia und Hera.

Demeter wird oft als reife Frau mit einer Getreidekrone und einer Fackel in der Hand dargestellt. Sie wird oft mit anderen Symbolen des Lebens wie Mohn, Füllhorn und Schlange in Verbindung gebracht.
