Der heilige Franziskus von Assisi (1181/1182 – 3. Oktober 1226) war ein römisch-katholischer Mönch und Mystiker, Prediger und der Gründer des Franziskanerordens. Franziskus wurde in eine wohlhabende Familie hineingeboren, verzichtete auf seinen Reichtum und nahm ein Leben in Armut und Dienst an. Er ist bekannt für seine starke spirituelle Hingabe und seine weiße Kutte sowie für seine vielen großartigen Werke der Wohltätigkeit.

Franziskus wurde in Assisi, Italien, in eine wohlhabende Familie geboren. Sein Vater Pietro di Bernardone war Tuchhändler und seine Mutter Pica französischer Herkunft. Franziskus wurde Giovanni getauft, aber sein Vater nannte ihn aufgrund seiner Liebe zu Frankreich Francesco (Franziskus).

Im Alter von 20 Jahren nahm Franziskus (Franz) an einem Militärausflug gegen Perugia teil und wurde gefangen genommen. Nach seiner Freilassung kehrte er nach Assisi zurück und erlebte ein spirituelles Erwachen. Er begann ein Leben in Armut, Keuschheit und Gehorsam zu führen und widmete sich Gott.
